Out on bail, rapists set victim ablaze

JNS: A rape survivor (23) was set ablaze allegedly by five men in Unnao district in the early hours of Thursday. All the persons have been arrested.

The victim suffered more than 90 per cent burns and has been referred to a hospital in Lucknow. The victim has named five persons, all of whom have been arrested, police said.

In her FIR registered in March this year, the victim accused five men of sexually assaulting her on several occasions in 2018.

Two of the accused were arrested following the FIR but later released on bail. “This morning, we were informed that some persons attempted to set the woman on fire. The woman named three persons following which they were rounded up,” said Vikrant Veer SP Unnao.

Now the victim has been referred to Lucknow hospital for better health care. We have arrested all five accused. Four teams were formed to nab the persons, said an official.

In her complaint, the victim accused one of the men of taking her to Rae Bareli and sexually assaulting her on the pretext of marriage. After she pressured him into getting married, she alleged that the accused took her to the fields, and, along with his associate, raped her on gunpoint.

Taking action on the matter, CM Yogi Adityanath directed Lucknow divisional commissioner and Inspector General to inspect the place of the incident and submit a report by the evening.
