PM Modi to Attend G7 Summit in Canada, Signals Fresh Start with New Canadian PM Mark Carney

Modi-Carney Meet Marks Turning Point in India-Canada Relations

New Delhi: In a major diplomatic breakthrough following months of strained relations, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has formally invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the upcoming G7 Summit, scheduled to be held in Kananaskis, Canada from June 15 to 17.

Accepting the invitation, PM Modi expressed optimism about a renewed chapter in India-Canada relations, stating that he is looking forward to meeting Carney at the summit.

In a post on social media platform X, Modi wrote:

“Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit… India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests.”

This marks a shift from earlier reports suggesting that PM Modi might skip the G7 summit due to deteriorated bilateral ties during former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s tenure—a move that, if it had happened, would have been Modi’s first absence from the G7 in six years.

Thaw in Tense Relations

India-Canada relations hit a historic low following the June 2023 killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, near a gurdwara in Vancouver. Trudeau had alleged Indian government involvement, sparking a diplomatic standoff that saw both nations expelling diplomats and suspending talks.

India firmly denied all allegations, maintaining that it had no involvement. In January 2025, a Canadian government commission investigating foreign interference reported that no definitive link to any foreign state was found in Nijjar’s killing—effectively vindicating India’s position.

Following Trudeau’s resignation earlier this year, Mark Carney took over leadership of the Liberal Party and became Prime Minister, signaling a potential shift in foreign policy tone.

The G7 Summit could now serve as a platform for resetting bilateral relations, with both leaders expected to engage in high-level talks focused on democratic values, economic cooperation, and strategic interests.
