Washington: US President Donald Trump is set to honour some of the world’s most prominent technology and science leaders, including SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, with the United States’ highest presidential awards for scientific and technological achievement.

Musk, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and AMD CEO Lisa Su will receive the National Medal of Science, one of the country’s highest honours for contributions to science and engineering.

Meanwhile, Nadella and Dell Technologies founder Michael Dell will receive the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the US government’s top recognition for technological achievement.

The awards will be presented at the White House during the “Science: A New Golden Age” summit, bringing together leading figures from the scientific and technology communities.

The ceremony is expected to highlight advances in artificial intelligence, scientific research and emerging technologies, as well as the growing role of private companies in driving innovation.

Musk, Brin, Huang and Su to receive science medal

Musk’s selection for the National Medal of Science places him alongside Brin, Huang and Su, who are being recognised for their contributions to science, engineering and technological development.

The National Medal of Science, established by Congress in 1959, recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to scientific knowledge in fields including physical, biological, mathematical and engineering sciences.

The National Medal of Technology and Innovation, established in 1980, recognises individuals whose technological achievements have contributed significantly to innovation, US competitiveness and quality of life.

Focus on AI and scientific innovation

The awards ceremony comes as the Trump administration places increased emphasis on scientific research, artificial intelligence and technological competitiveness.

The White House has promoted its “Science: A New Golden Age” initiative, focusing on ambitious scientific research and closer cooperation between government agencies, researchers and the private sector.

The administration has also launched the Genesis Mission, an initiative aimed at using artificial intelligence and federal research infrastructure to accelerate scientific discoveries.

The upcoming ceremony will mark the first time Trump has presented both the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation during either of his presidential administrations.

The recognition of Musk, Nadella and other technology leaders is expected to underline Washington’s focus on maintaining US leadership in science, artificial intelligence and advanced technology.
