Assam: To mark International Museum Day, Cotton University inaugurated a three-day exhibition titled “Archaeology: A Journey through Our Shared Past” on May 16, 2024. The event, held at the MCB building, was organized by the Department of Archaeology in collaboration with the Assam and Kamrup chapters of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).
Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Ganesh Chandra Wary, along with Registrar Dr. Arindam Garg, opened the exhibition in the presence of other university dignitaries and faculty members.
Curated by Dr. Manjil Hazarika, Dr. Ritika Sahu, and Jougathi Basumatary, the exhibition features diverse galleries showcasing Palaeolithic artefacts, Neolithic tools, and fossil wood artefacts from across India.
Highlights include replicas of iconic Harappan artefacts, local archaeological treasures, and unique items like the handmade pottery of the Wui community and traditional Hiras pots.
The event also offers interactive experiences such as mock archaeological digs and displays of excavation tools. Aimed at public outreach, the exhibition has already attracted over 300 visitors, including students and faculty from various institutions and officials from the Assam State Museum.
The exhibition celebrates INTACH’s 40th anniversary, emphasizing its crucial role in heritage conservation. Open to all, the exhibition runs until May 18, 2024.
